Glee 3.12 “The Spanish Teacher” Review

This show is a complete and utter mess. Starting with the fact that Will has been a Spanish teacher and yet he does not know any Spanish. He cannot even say the word ears in Spanish. How do the people on the show expect us to take it seriously when they do not take themselves seriously at all? The thing about Will being the worst Spanish teacher ever has been a joke among critics for many years now. However, it was simply a joke, but now that it’s real, one wonders what the producers of the show are really up to. By acknowledging this fact on the show, they are pretty much slapping its royal fans in the face. In addition, such an admission indicates that the show does not really care much about the logic of living in the real world. This of course would be fine, only that the show is becoming somewhat hypocritical. In other words, it wants to pass on messages about bullying and respecting cultures, while at the same time not really caring about what goes on in the real world.

Santana made things worse when she brought the issue of stereotyping into the show. She said that Will was stereotyping her Latino heritage. It is hard to believe that the show that has a lot of things going on, also decided to preach about stereotyping.

Sue has a baby and there are some romantic moments in the show, which have had a few weeks in making. However, the love triangle of Shane, Sam and Mercedes has a few problems. It is hard to invest in who will be chosen by Mercedes and it is also hard to make any arguments in favor of either guy. In most cases, we have seen Mercedes and Sam holding hands a lot on the show, but we have not seen her holding hands with Shane or anything like that. It is, therefore, hard to believe that Mercedes has a difficult decision to make, since we have only seen her interest in one of the guys. It is hard to think that Shane and Mercedes have any attachments. It is amusing that despite the fact that Mercedes and Sam have not spoken to or seen each other in months; Emma can suggest that they should not speak to each other.

As a show, Glee expects that when a longing look is given or sad song is sung, the audience will feel something. The show does not attempt to earn any of these emotions. It’s as if the emotions are just forced upon the audience. In this episode, it is seen when Kurt chastises Fin for keeping his proposal a secret. He goes to say that they are supposed to be brothers. This is hard to believe, since all we have seen is them sharing a few scenes in the course of the past episodes.

All that can be said is that Glee always finds a way of doing things wrong, even when it intends to do them right. It keeps contradicting itself and all the emotions in the show are just forced upon its audience. The show does not really make much effort to let the audience feel the things it intends them to.
