Glee 3.10 “Yes/No” Review

It took less than a few seconds for “Yes/No” to become a flat-out “Oh, NO”.

A few minutes into the first episode of Glee for 2012 and we are attacked with too much randomness bordering on the ridiculous. Will Schuester playing fantasy football? A sudden Grease “Summer Nights” number out of the blue? I mean… REALLY?

It does not matter that this was made out to be one that shouldn’t be taken seriously. It’s supposed to be fluff, and people breaking into song and dance abruptly aren’t at all strange. It’s all about the music, after all, and not the story and the telling of it.

But although that’s how the show’s creators sells it, they still apparently have some ‘serious’ messages they want to impart, using the show as the medium. However, if they try to inject a story to it, they should do it right and not pile too much too soon and on too many characters that viewers are left baffled, wondering what on earth is going on.

There was also a continuity problem. Take the Wemma situation, for example. It has been like a disjointed round of the Cha Cha Cha, how these two move in their relationship: two steps forward, one step back. One step forward, two steps back. A very long pause… Then another step forward, two steps back. We see them going somewhere; then we don’t. They are left unnoticed for many episodes, and then the focus is on them again in such a rushed manner? That’s just not fair.

The proposal scene was well-choreographed, however, and would’ve gone down perfectly if the build-up wasn’t close to… inexistent. We weren’t entirely too convinced about the reasons for Will’s initial hesitations about his future with Emma. What was he truly feeling? What was driving him? We actually get the feeling that he was simply becoming a means to an end, someone the kids can use so they can sing more.

The lack of build-up could also be said for Finn’s storyline. We were all just supposed to accept that he’s lost and confused after his mom’s revelation, and he wants to marry Rachel. Then there is Kurt lamenting his future, Mercedes fantasizing about Sam…

Too much, too soon. TMI. Maybe these many storylines in this one episode is to lead up to the next episode (although it is difficult to see how any of these lead up to the Michael Jackson tribute episode) but they could’ve at least taken care with presenting them properly and not in the haphazard manner that they did. Frankly, it was difficult to care about any of the characters.
